You, Jo, asked what my number one rule for writing was. And here's my amazing answer. It's similar in ways to your's.
Ideas.
"Ideas?" you may be asking. "How do you keep that a rule?" It's quite possible, let me tell you.I like fast moving plots. Like City of Bones. The plot was very fast moving and had tons of action. I couldn't put it down and that's why I stayed up all night reading. But hey, it's summer. It doesn't matter if I stay up all night, as long as I sleep the next night.
Anyway. Getting off topic. In order to keep a plot nice and quick, you need ideas. Don't even sit down to write if you don't have any ideas. You're story will be as bored as you are.
With ideas you can create plot twists, turn trusted characters into villians, make your villian convince one of the protagonists of something that isn't true. You can do anything, as long as you have ideas.
