Hello fictional peoples!! Today Jo and I are going to talk about different book genres and authors and stuff. And we’ll probably get off topic, like we have for the past two weeks. Anyway! I, Marie, am going to be this blue color and Jo is going to be purple.
Yeah! Purple!!! Anyway. First of all, I’d just like to say, that I am so very sad, that I’ll have to kill for the very first time. Sadness. Poor charrie. But ANYWAY!!! On a happier note, we shall talk about books. Ah books. The smell of books. The feel of books. It’s nice. So, let’s start with . . . what book have we both read?
Uhmmm. PJO and HoO. And Mind Games. And City of Bones. And . . . Michael Vey. And Divergent. And The Hunger Games. And probably a ton more.
Let’s start with something a lot of people have read. How about, Divergent.
Okay. So. Divergent. I will admit, it was good. Until everyone started reading it and talking about it. That always drives me nuts. I especially hate people who seem to only read books that will become movies. But ANYWAY. Divergent was good.
Yeah. I thought it was pretty good. I haven’t finished the series. And . . . to be honest, I don’t really intend to. It was good and all, but, I didn’t enjoy it as much as other people. So, I’m not going to dwell on it for long.
Yeah. I may or may not read Allegient. I mean, someone spoiled it for me, so I don’t really want to, but I also feel like I need to. So. Let’s move onto . . . PJO?
So, first of all, I’d like to say, that Veronica Roth is an amazing writer. I think she did a really good job of describing everything and developing the characters and the plot was amazing too. So, yeah. Anyway, Percy Jackson. So, I personally give this series a lot of credit because it’s what kind of flipped a switch in my brain, which told me to start reading. Because, I wasn’t a fan of reading. Not until Marie came along and was like, “READ THIS!” And, BAM. Now I read. So, just expect me to say a lot about this. So, anyway. I really liked it a lot. The way the plot is, all the characters, just, everything to be honest.
Yes. Percy Jackson is amazing. The series and the character. I especially loved the titles of the chapters. They were awesome. And can I just say that Nico is awesome? Because he is.
Yes. Everyone is amazing. Well, almost everyone. Luke and Kronos aren’t that amazing. But, they are pretty good. Writing wise, not like, “you’re a great person!” wise. And just the way that Rick Riordan takes his time to lead all the way up to the war. And all the details he provides, it’s weird to think that this was a bedtime story at one point. It’s the best one ever, but it’s weird to think that it was.
Yeah. He is a really great writer, and story teller. While we’re on the subject of awesome story tellers, we need to talk about J.K. Rowling. She is a master at creating plots. Like seriously. The way she wove everything together in Harry Potter was just amazing. Things from the beginning books became important in the last books, and it was just amazing.
Oh yes. So, I’ve only read the first one (shameful, I know. But I’m slow, okay?) and I’m somewhere in the middle of the second. Of Harry Potter. So, anyway. So far, I think she’s an unbelievably good writer. She also puts a lot of effort into everything. It still amazes me how she was able to come up with all those names and explanations for almost everything. Like Marie said, the way she wove everything together was just, astonishing. I feel like writers are from a different planet. Where everything that they write about, is real there and they’re just writing biographies or autobiographies.
That would be an interesting story idea Jo. That was random, but I felt like saying it. So, back to the topic. J.K. Rowling. I was reading her biography or autobiography, I don’t quite remember which it was, and she wrote pretty much the whole first book on scraps of paper. And I also remember reading that she only wanted to publish Harry Potter to see her book on the shelf of a bookstore.
Oh yeah! Wasn’t it something like she started the book on a napkin at a cafe? I don’t even remember. But, I personally think she’s pretty much one of the Gods of Writing. She’s pretty amazing. My goal is to be like her. To write a book that millions will like, obsess over and will be talked about for years and years. I would want to see my book on a bookshelf in stores everywhere. That would be amazing. But, I rush things in my stories. So . . . most of my works are short stories. I’m more of a fast paced writer. I want to learn to slow down the events. Which, brings me to John Green.
Yeah, I think she did. So. John Green. I, sadly, have only read one of his books, The Fault in Our Stars. I want to read all of his other books. So . . . I don’t really know what to say about him . . . he’s an amazing writer. Really, really amazing. And . . . he’s really good at similes and metaphors.
Yes. I’ve only read The Fault in our Stars by him as well. I want to read Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines. So, I don’t have much to say. But I do have a few thoughts. So, from what I’ve heard, he enjoys his characters to have full names (First, Middle, Last). Plus, a nickname. Which I think is fascinating. Most of my characters don’t have middle names. I think like, two do. And two don’t even have last names. But, anyway, the only thing that bothers me is some of the content of the books. Just because I feel like I should’ve been a few years older to read it, but, I’m not really sure. He’s good at “taking things slow” but not, so slow, that you get bored o
f reading it (which my friend actually did, but I don’t think that counts. He doesn’t read much anyway) and developing the characters and their relationships and things. So, what I’m pretty much saying is that, I think he’s the best at creating the characters.
Yeah, he’s really good at character development. And creating characters in general. which brings me, for no particular reason, to Marie Lu. First off, she has an awesome first name. But her characters are amazing. And how she . . . hints at things and reveals them later in the story, just amazing. I really like her. She was a video game designer. Just thought I’d point that out. But I like how complex her characters are and how she shows their personalities really well.
So. I still don’t know much about her. I’m reading Legend by her. But, I’m not finished, or really close to finished. But what I can say is that I like her so far. She has a good plot. And I really like how she “grabs” you in the beginning. She’s more fast paced about it. Like me. And she had a really great hook. And I like how the story is escalating. It’s really good. She’s an amazing writer. Do you think we should speak of the not so good of writers and or books?
Okay. Let’s talk about not so good books. Uhmmm. Summer of the Monkeys is one. Can I just say that I hated that book so much. It was so boring! I mean, the characters were great and everything. But it seemed like . . . Well, first off, let me say that I like books that are action packed and really fast. Summer of the Monkeys was none of those.
Oh yeah. I thought it was okay. Like, the writer, was pretty good. It was the story line and the plot and stuff that bored me. It just didn’t have enough action. So, what genre was that? Was that realistic fiction? I believe so. I just, didn’t like it.
Historical fiction actually. But yeah. I guess the writer was good, but the story wasn’t. Anyway. What other books didn’t we like? Oh! I was reading this one book, Little Brother or something. And just a few pages in and I didn’t like it. First off, it swore, secondly, the author’s writing style was kind of weird. Like, Jo’s writing style is really . . . IDK, happy and really . . . IDK. And mine is pretty formal, but I’m getting better at making it not so formal. And this author . . . I don’t even know. It was just weird. But one of my friends read it, so I thought I might as well. Yeah. Maybe I’ll try reading it again. Probably not.
Yeah. I think I’ve heard of that. But, then again, I have a terrible memory. It could’ve been something totally different. My writing is really happy? Well, okay then. Considering I’m writing about depression, that’s going to be a problem. ANYWAY. I can’t think of many books that we’ve read that we didn’t like . . .OH! First of all, I read this book, not Marie. It was called The Art of Truth or Dare. So, A.) It was pretty good. Well, the romancy parts. This person is a good writer. But, the plot was just, bleh. What the heck? I know it was realistic fiction. That’s probably why I didn’t like it as much. Just, it was about this girl. She liked this guy. She’s obsessed with drawing. So is the guy. She gets the guy half way through. And, it’s so boring. So, so, boring. And I didn’t really like some of the content . . . it was weird. But, I thought the way she/he took the time to think of the school, the names, the descriptions and things, were pretty good. I could visualize it. But, it was just, so boring. And then there’s Beyonders. It was . . . a little over the top. I couldn’t really comprehend what was happening. Especially when he fell into the hippo. It was weird. But, I thought it was . . . okay.
Well, it’s not really happy. But . . . here. I’ll just show you fictional people something that Jo wrote and you can decide for yourself.
I didn't think my world could get worse. But I was wrong. First, I get kicked out of the orchestra, band, choir, and the art club. Then my girlfriend breaks up with me. And now, Mozart is dead. I could have dealt with the break up, yeah, but I've been part of the orchestra, band, choir, and art club since I was four! And Mozart. Mozart was my best friend. My poor goldfish. It was bad enough that I'd lose most of my humanity and get drafted into the army. Now all this happens? I can't believe it. Happy birthday to me.
"Ow! Watch where you’re going!" I stumbled a little bit as I heard a girl yell at me. When I regained my balance, I looked up to apologize. I saw bright blue eyes glaring at me. They seemed to shimmer with shades of aqua, like a painting of the ocean.
"I-I'm so sorry," I said. I started running my fingers through my copper hair. Force of habit whenever I get nervous or anxious or something of the like.
"Well, you should be. What's your problem?"
"It's my birthday," I mumbled.
"So?"
I don’t know how you describe that . . . IDK. It flows and it’s awesome. But anyway. Beyonders. That book . . . had an amazing idea. Like, if I could use that idea for another book it would be good. I’m not saying it would be good just because I wrote it, just because the idea was good. But the way he executed it was . . . not so good. What bugged me was that they were never held back. They got everything they were supposed to without much problem. And that is why I’m kind of scared about publishing my book. Because both it and Beyonders are like Middle Ages quest type books. And they’re pretty similar. Not so much so that it would be like . . . a violation of copyright. But pretty similar.
Thank you, I’m glad that you like the way I write. But, to be honest, I think you’re a better writer because A.) You’ve been doing it longer B.) You’re also an amazing editor and C.) You know some better . . . phrases? And words. Like, synonyms for a lot of things which makes it more interesting. Like, this one part, is an example of what I call a “phrase”
Her eyes flitted up to meet mine before dropping back down.
You see that? Yeah I would’ve said something more plain. And then I would proceed to use it over and over. So yeah. I need to work on that anyway, I agree. The idea was great, and Brandon Mull is amazing, but, the way he executed the whole thing, it was a little bit hard to grasp where he was really going. It seemed a bit too easy. So, I’m assuming that’s all we have for you. Well, that’s all I have for you. Marie might have some more. Share if you please.
I actually do have a bit more to say. First, thanks. But I like your writing better. And we’re going to be here all night saying, “No, YOUR writing is better” so let me just say, that’s probably why we work well together. I have good phrases, and you can make it flow. So yeah. And now, I feel the need to talk about the Candy Shop War. Oh my Pillars of Life that book was so insanely boring. Just . . . ugh. The idea was good, once again, but just the way he executed it. I couldn’t finish it. I got halfway through and it was torture to read it. I just . . . no. That book sucked. No matter what you fictional people tell me. So yeah. Now I’m done.
I was going to try and read it to form an opinion about it myself, but, I have a never ending reading list. I can’t fit it in. At the moment. One day though. One day. So. Now, that’s all we have for you. So, Goodnight, Good Morning, or Good Afternoon, or, some other alien time depending where you are from fictional peoples. I hope you have enjoyed our discussion. And yeah. Marie’s right. If she hadn’t said something like that then we would’ve been on for hours saying who’s better. But it’s true. We are an amazing team. So, bye!!!!
Good Mythical Morning! And pozegnanie or dobranoc, depending on stuff. ANYWAY. Bye!
~Marie and Jo!!
